The county

Essex is unusual in how sharply its housing changes across a few miles: dense brick multi-family buildings and high-rises in Newark, hundred-year-old Victorians with steep carpeted staircases in Montclair and the Oranges, and post-war colonials in Livingston and the Caldwells. Those are three different cleaning problems. We answer the phone at any hour and book by appointment, and the visit is planned around the building rather than around a standard package.

Essex County packs a full range of American housing into about 130 square miles. In Newark you are working in brick apartment buildings and multi-family houses where the carpet takes traffic from several households and where getting equipment to a third floor is part of the job. Twenty minutes north-west, Montclair and the Oranges are full of houses built between the 1890s and the 1920s, narrow staircases with a turn in them, original hardwood with area rugs over it, and rooms that were never designed around a vacuum. Out toward Livingston, Millburn and the Caldwells the stock is post-war and newer, with wall-to-wall carpet through the bedrooms and finished basements below grade. Each of those needs a different plan, and the plan is made when we see the place, not before.

Pre-war staircases

A staircase from 1910 has a turn in it, treads of unequal depth and a carpeted stringer on both sides. There is no machine head that fits it. Stairs in this part of the county get done by hand, step by step, and they are the surface where the difference shows most because you look down at them from directly above.

Finished basements below grade

The newer stock west of the Oranges almost all has a finished lower level, and below-grade carpet stays cooler and damper than the rest of the house. It dries more slowly, it holds odor longer, and it is the first place to check after any plumbing problem upstairs.

Local notes

  • Montclair and the Oranges are dense with houses built between the 1890s and the 1920s, which means steep narrow staircases with a winder turn, the slowest and most hand-worked part of any carpet job.
  • Branch Brook Park in Newark is known for its cherry blossoms, and the pollen season that comes with a mature tree canopy is the same season the mattress and upholstery calls go up.
  • South Mountain Reservation runs along the county's western edge through Millburn, Maplewood and West Orange, and houses backing onto it track in leaf litter and wet clay through autumn and spring.
  • Newark's older multi-family buildings frequently have no elevator, so equipment reaches the upper floors by hand, worth knowing when you are booking a third-floor apartment.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Essex County

Question 1: Do you cover all of Essex County?

Yes, from Newark and the Ironbound up through Bloomfield and Nutley, across Montclair and the Oranges, and out to Livingston, Millburn, Short Hills and the Caldwells. If you are in Essex County, we come to you.

Question 2: Can you get equipment up to a third-floor apartment?

Yes. Plenty of Newark and East Orange buildings have no elevator and we plan for it. Mention the floor and whether there is an elevator when you book, so the visit is scheduled with enough time.

Question 3: How do you handle an old staircase with a turn in it?

By hand, on every step. Treads, risers and the carpeted stringer at each side all take soil differently and none of them can be reached with a machine head sitting flat. It is the slowest part of the job and the most visible afterwards.

Question 4: Do you do water damage restoration in Essex County?

Yes. Extraction, drying and dehumidifying after a burst pipe, an appliance leak or a wet basement, across Newark, the Oranges, Bloomfield, Montclair, Livingston and the Passaic River towns of Nutley, Belleville and Fairfield. The first day or two decides whether carpet and padding are saved, so call as soon as the water is stopped.

Question 5: Who cleans carpet in Essex County, New Jersey?

Carpet Cleaning Nearby covers all 23 Essex County municipalities, from the brick multi families of Newark and Irvington to the Victorian staircases of Montclair and the Oranges. Every job is done at the property, any hour, by appointment. Call (917) 670-4072.

Question 6: How much does carpet cleaning cost in Essex County?

No price is published. The estimate is written for the property described and holds at the door. On an Essex staircase with a turn in it, the hand work on every tread, riser and stringer is what moves the figure, so the staircase is counted rather than guessed.

I had a great experience with this carpet company! I called this past Friday and they were able to help me right away. From start to finish, Jacob was professional, friendly, and did an excellent job. Jacob was punctual, respectful of my home, and took the time to make sure the carpets were cleaned thoroughly. The difference was amazing and the carpets look refreshed. I really appreciate Jacob’s attention to detail and great customer service. The price was very reasonable for the job that was completed. I would definitely recommend Jacob and Carpet Cleaning Nearby to anyone looking for reliable carpet cleaning!
